Belgorod authorities resume mobile internet services and street lighting amid security concerns and infrastructure challenges.
The acting governor of Belgorod region, Alexander Shuvaev, has ordered the restoration of mobile internet services and the reactivation of street lighting in the city of Belgorod. This move follows a careful assessment of the local security situation and public demand, signaling a cautious easing of restrictions in the area.
According to official statements, stable provision of mobile internet resumed in Belgorod from the evening of Saturday, May 30, alongside the reintroduction of urban street lighting. The decisions were made after a thorough analysis by the regional operational headquarters and consideration of residents’ requests.
Context of Security and Infrastructure Challenges
Belgorod, a border region frequently affected by cross-border attacks, has faced ongoing security concerns. Since October 2025, the city experienced periodic disruptions of street lighting, a measure adopted to reduce strain on the power grid and facilitate faster restoration of electricity following shelling incidents.
"These measures were taken after a comprehensive review of the situation and in response to residents' appeals," said Governor Shuvaev, emphasizing that local authorities in other settlements will decide autonomously on similar measures based on evolving security conditions.
The governor also mentioned that some defensive steps have been implemented to mitigate risks to the civilian population, though details remain classified. He noted that should threats intensify, some restrictions might be temporarily reinstated.
Previously, the former governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, had promised to investigate the prior decision to partially disable mobile internet services, acknowledging the tension between security measures and the need for effective communication channels for public safety alerts.
Recent hostilities include a series of heavy missile attacks on the night of May 25, which damaged energy infrastructure and caused disruptions in electricity and water supplies. The attacks resulted in injuries and damage to public and private property.
This restoration initiative is seen as a signal toward stabilizing local civil infrastructure and improving residents’ quality of life amid ongoing conflict risks.
