Belgium Issues Visas to Taliban Representatives Ahead of EU Migration Talks
Belgium granted one-day visas to five Taliban members to participate in Brussels EU meeting on Afghan deportations.

Belgium has issued one-day visas to five representatives of the radical Islamist movement Taliban, facilitating their attendance at a European Union meeting in Brussels focused on the deportation of Afghan nationals. This development comes amid ongoing discussions within the EU regarding migration policies and security concerns related to Afghan asylum seekers.
The Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that these visas are valid solely for presence within Belgium and that the exact date of the Taliban delegation's visit was withheld for security reasons. However, reports indicate that the Taliban representatives are expected to arrive in Brussels on June 23.
EU Migration Policy and Afghan Deportations
The invitation to Taliban representatives to engage in "technical-level" talks was extended by the European Union in May. The primary objective is to address the repatriation of Afghan nationals residing in EU member states without legal status and those deemed a security threat.
“The meeting aims to discuss the return of Afghan citizens who do not have the right to stay in EU countries and are considered security risks,” said EU officials involved in the talks.
Since 2013, more than one million Afghan nationals have applied for refugee status within the EU, with approximately half of these applications approved, according to Eurostat. In 2025, Afghan applicants remain the largest group seeking asylum in the EU.
Following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, around 20 EU countries have initiated deportations of Afghan nationals. This has sparked controversy and criticism from human rights organizations, which warn that deportees face risks of persecution, arbitrary detention, and torture—particularly vulnerable groups such as women, journalists, former government officials, and activists.
Germany, for instance, has deported over a hundred Afghanistan nationals since 2024 alone.
Wall Street Market Impact
From a financial markets perspective, these developments could influence sector rotation and trading volumes, particularly within defense, security, and immigration-related technology stocks. Companies engaged in border security, surveillance, and immigration enforcement solutions may see increased investor interest as EU countries reinforce migration controls.
Equity research teams are closely monitoring the EU's migration policy shifts since they may impact government contracts and spending in these sectors. Additionally, heightened geopolitical risks stemming from Taliban engagement in EU policymaking could affect broader market sentiment, leading to cautious trading in European equities and related sectors on Wall Street.
Investors should watch for changes in trading volumes and price movements in stocks tied to defense and security, as sector rotation may favor these areas amid growing migration challenges and border security initiatives.
